A practical guide to dairy cow ownership, covering breed selection, housing requirements, feeding programs, milk production, and real-world annual costs for small-scale dairy operations.
Daily dairy cow care includes 2โ4 hours of labor per cow: twice-daily milking (1โ1.5 hours), feed preparation and feeding (0.5โ1 hour), water provision, manure management, and health monitoring. Dairy cows are creatures of strict routine; any deviation disrupts milk production and health.
A dairy cow consumes 40โ60 lbs of forage (hay or pasture) daily plus 5โ15 lbs of grain depending on milk production stage. Feed costs $8โ15 per day ($2,920โ5,475 annually). Mineral and vitamin supplementation adds $300โ500 annually.
Dairy cows do not require "exercise" but benefit from pasture access 4โ6 months annually for psychological well-being and hoof health. Confinement 6โ8 months per year (winter) is standard practice, during which cows spend 12โ14 hours lying in stalls.
Hoof trimming every 6โ8 weeks ($50โ100 per visit) is critical; neglected hooves lead to lameness costing $1,000+ to treat. Udder health requires daily monitoring (visual inspection for swelling, heat, or abnormal milk). Coat brushing reduces stress but is not mandatory.
Mastitis (udder infection) is the most common and costly disease in dairy operations, affecting 20โ30% of herds annually. Treated cases cost $150โ500 per cow; prevention requires excellent milking hygiene and rapid treatment. Reproductive disorders extend calving interval, reducing production.
A dairy heifer (2โ3 years old, ready to calve) costs $2,500โ4,500. Annual operating costs: feed ($3,500โ6,000), milking equipment maintenance ($500), veterinary care ($500โ1,500), bedding and water ($800), and labor ($3,000+). Break-even for small operations is 4โ6 years.
