A practical guide to raising pigs for meat or breeding, covering housing setup, nutrition, health management, breeding timelines, and real-world annual costs for small-scale pig operations.
Daily pig care requires 30โ60 minutes per 5โ10 pigs: feeding, watering, shelter mucking, and health checks. Pigs are intelligent and social; they require enrichment (wallows, rooting areas, toys) to prevent stress behaviors (tail biting, aggression). Daily handling keeps pigs calm.
A growing pig (feeder to market weight) consumes 4โ5 lbs of feed daily, costing $15โ30 per pig per month in commercial ration. A breeding sow consumes 5โ8 lbs daily ($50โ100 monthly). Pasture access reduces feed costs 10โ20% via foraged greens and insects.
Pigs do not require exercise but benefit from rooting access and space to move freely. Confined pigs (crates) prevent movement but are controversial; pasture-raised systems provide psychological well-being at higher management cost.
Pigs require wallows in summer (mud keeps them cool); without access, pigs overheat and become stressed. Hoof care is minimal if pigs live on pasture or soft bedding. Ear notching for identification is standard practice.
Disease susceptibility is high in crowded conditions. Respiratory infections, parasites, and foot issues are common. Vaccinations and parasite control cost $10โ25 per pig annually. Swine dysentery (diarrhea) and African swine fever are economically devastating.
A feeder pig (40โ60 lbs) costs $75โ150; a breeding sow $150โ400. Annual costs per pig: feed ($200โ400 for meat pig, $500โ800 for breeding sow), bedding/housing ($100โ200), veterinary ($50โ150), and miscellaneous ($50โ100). A market-weight pig (250 lbs) costs $400โ600 to raise.
