Golden Retrievers are friendly, devoted, and eager to please. They rank among the most popular breeds worldwide for good reason โ they're gentle with children, sociable with other pets, and endlessly loyal. This guide covers everything you need to keep your Golden happy and healthy.
Exercise: Golden Retrievers need 1-2 hours of exercise daily. This can include walks, fetch, swimming (they love water), or off-leash play in a secure area. Mental stimulation matters too โ puzzle toys and training sessions prevent boredom.
Grooming: Brush your Golden at least 3 times per week, daily during shedding season (spring and fall). Use a slicker brush for the outer coat and an undercoat rake for the dense underlayer. Regular brushing prevents matting and reduces the amount of fur on your furniture.
Routine: Goldens thrive on consistency. Establish regular meal times, walk schedules, and bedtime routines. They're sensitive to household changes and do best with predictability.
Adult Goldens (2-7 years): Feed a high-quality dog food formulated for large breeds. Most adults do well on 2-3 cups per day, split into two meals. Avoid free-feeding โ Goldens will overeat given the chance.
Weight management: This breed is prone to obesity. Monitor body condition regularly. You should be able to feel (but not see) your Golden's ribs. If you can't, reduce portions slightly.
Supplements: Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) support coat health and may help with joint inflammation. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are worth discussing with your vet, especially for dogs over 5.
Foods to avoid: Grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts. See our guide on safe human foods for dogs.
Golden Retrievers were bred as hunting dogs โ they need real exercise, not just a quick walk around the block.
Minimum: 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity daily.
Mental exercise: Don't underestimate mental stimulation. Nose work, puzzle feeders, and training sessions tire a Golden out faster than physical exercise alone.
Weather considerations: Goldens tolerate cold well thanks to their double coat. In hot weather, exercise early morning or evening and always provide water and shade.
Bathing: Every 6-8 weeks, or as needed. Use a dog-specific shampoo. Rinse thoroughly โ their dense coat holds soap residue.
Ears: Check weekly for redness, odor, or discharge. Goldens' floppy ears trap moisture, making ear infections common. Dry ears thoroughly after swimming.
Nails: Trim every 2-3 weeks. If you hear clicking on hard floors, they're too long.
Teeth: Brush 2-3 times per week with dog-safe toothpaste. Dental chews help between brushings.
Life expectancy: 10-12 years. Maintaining a healthy weight is the single most impactful thing you can do for longevity.
Lifetime cost: Approximately $20,000-$35,000 over 10-12 years.
