Rabbit bonding is not instantaneous. Many owners rush the process and end up with aggressive rabbits. Here's the HRS 4-stage protocol that actually works and the trust milestones to watch for. Your rabbit won't trust you for weeks.
Stage 1 (scent introduction, 1-2 weeks): Place your rabbit near you without forcing interaction. Let them smell you. Spend time in the same room. Stage 2 (supervised interaction, 2-3 weeks): Allow your rabbit to approach you. Offer hand-fed pellets or greens. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes). Stage 3 (loose bonding, 2-3 weeks): Your rabbit seeks you out. Gentle petting is accepted. They may rest near you. Stage 4 (bonded, 1-2 weeks): Your rabbit grooms you, sleeps on your lap, trusts you completely.
Nutrition supports bonding. Hand-feeding treats creates positive associations.
Exercise during bonding. A tired rabbit is a calm rabbit. Provide space for running and exploring together.
Gentle handling during bonding builds trust. Never force interaction. Let your rabbit set the pace.
Bonding prevents behavioral problems. Bonded rabbits are healthier, happier, and less aggressive.
Multi-rabbit bonding follows the same 4 stages. Failure to follow stages results in fighting. Safety precautions: clip nails before intros, have a vet on standby, supervise closely.
