• Stress-related illness — the Belgian Hare's flighty, high-strung temperament means that loud environments, rough handling, or sudden routine changes provoke real physiological stress that can suppress appetite and tip the rabbit into GI stasis; prevention is a calm, predictable home, gentle floor-level interaction, and consistent feeding and exercise times.
• Injury from bolting — a startled Belgian Hare reacts explosively, and its long, light-boned legs and arched spine can be fractured if it slams into a wall, slips on a hard floor, or struggles violently when grabbed; rabbit-proof the exercise space, remove hard hazards, and never restrain or chase the animal.
• GI stasis — the gut slows or stops when fiber is low or the rabbit is dehydrated, in pain, or stressed, and this breed's nervous nature makes stress-driven episodes more likely; any hare that stops eating or passing droppings for 12 hours is a same-day veterinary emergency.
• Dental malocclusion — overgrown or misaligned teeth occur in any rabbit fed too little fiber; an unlimited grass-hay diet keeps the continuously growing molars worn, and a yearly back-teeth check catches drooling, weight loss, or a dropped appetite early.
• Uterine cancer in unspayed does — adenocarcinoma is common in female rabbits over three years old, so spaying both protects long-term health and reduces the hormonal restlessness and aggression that are especially disruptive in an already high-energy breed.

Life span: 8–12 yrs

• Dental malocclusion — the breed's short, flat skull crowds continuously-growing teeth, leading to overgrown or misaligned molars and incisors; prevented largely by an unlimited grass-hay diet and caught early by yearly back-teeth checks.
• GI stasis — the gut slows or stops, often triggered by a low-fiber diet, dehydration, pain, or stress; it is a genuine emergency, and any rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings for 12 hours needs same-day veterinary care.
• Ear infections and mites — the lopped ears trap moisture and reduce airflow, raising the risk of wax buildup, bacterial infection, and ear-canker mites; inspect and gently clean the ears weekly and watch for head-tilt or persistent scratching.
• Heat stroke — at 2 to 4 pounds a Holland Lop has little thermal mass and cannot sweat, so indoor temperatures above about 26°C/80°F are dangerous; provide shade, airflow, and frozen water bottles through summer.
• Uterine cancer in unspayed does — adenocarcinoma is common in female rabbits over three years old; spaying both protects long-term health and prevents reproductive and hormonal behavior problems.
