• GI stasis — the gut slows or stops, usually triggered by a low-fiber diet, dehydration, pain, or stress; it is a true emergency, and any Havana that stops eating or passing droppings for 12 hours needs same-day veterinary care to restart the gut before toxins build.
• Obesity-driven complications — at only 1.6 to 2.5 kg a Havana gains weight fast on excess pellets, and an overweight rabbit cannot reach its hindquarters to groom, which leads to caked soiling, flystrike risk, and pressure sores; prevent it by capping pellets at a quarter cup and weighing monthly.
• Sore hocks (pododermatitis) — pressure ulcers on the hairless underside of the hind feet, worsened by wire flooring, excess weight, and damp bedding; provide solid resting surfaces and soft mats, keep the rabbit lean, and inspect the foot pads for redness or scabbing.
• Dental malocclusion — although the Havana has a normal-length face and is less prone than dwarf breeds, its continuously growing teeth can still misalign from injury or genetics; an unlimited grass-hay diet drives the side-to-side chewing that wears molars down, and a vet should check the back teeth yearly.
• Uterine adenocarcinoma in unspayed does — uterine cancer is common in female rabbits over three years old; spaying before about age two both protects long-term health and removes the hormonal and territorial behavior that intact does often develop.

• Dental malocclusion — the breed's short, flat skull crowds continuously-growing teeth, leading to overgrown or misaligned molars and incisors; prevented largely by an unlimited grass-hay diet and caught early by yearly back-teeth checks.
• GI stasis — the gut slows or stops, often triggered by a low-fiber diet, dehydration, pain, or stress; it is a genuine emergency, and any rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings for 12 hours needs same-day veterinary care.
• Ear infections and mites — the lopped ears trap moisture and reduce airflow, raising the risk of wax buildup, bacterial infection, and ear-canker mites; inspect and gently clean the ears weekly and watch for head-tilt or persistent scratching.
• Heat stroke — at 2 to 4 pounds a Holland Lop has little thermal mass and cannot sweat, so indoor temperatures above about 26°C/80°F are dangerous; provide shade, airflow, and frozen water bottles through summer.
• Uterine cancer in unspayed does — adenocarcinoma is common in female rabbits over three years old; spaying both protects long-term health and prevents reproductive and hormonal behavior problems.
