Life span: 12–14 yrs

• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — the defining serious risk: a thickening of the heart muscle that can cause heart failure, sudden fatal blood clots, or sudden death; the Sphynx is notably predisposed, often shows no early signs, and reputable breeding requires regular screening echocardiograms of breeding cats.
• Hereditary myopathy (spasticity / 'Sphynx myopathy') — an inherited muscle disorder seen in the breed causing muscle weakness, a stiff or abnormal gait, and difficulty swallowing in affected cats; severity ranges from mild to life-limiting.
• Skin oil and sebum disorders — the hairless skin overproduces and cannot wick away oil, leading to greasy skin, clogged follicles, and secondary skin infections if regular bathing is neglected; this is a lifelong management need, not a one-off.
• Urticaria pigmentosa — a recurring crusty, reddened, itchy skin condition (a mast-cell skin disease) reported in the breed; requires veterinary diagnosis and ongoing management rather than home treatment.
• Dental disease — the breed is prone to early and progressive periodontal disease and gingivitis, leading to pain and tooth loss without consistent home brushing and professional cleanings.
• Sunburn and cold-related illness — not a genetic disease but a direct consequence of having no coat: unprotected skin burns near windows and the cat is genuinely vulnerable to cold, both of which require active environmental management.

Persian

Life span: 14–15 yrs

• Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) — the defining inherited Persian risk: fluid-filled cysts progressively replace kidney tissue, often causing kidney failure in middle age. There is a definitive DNA test; buying from a PKD-tested line is the single most important purchase decision in this breed.
• Brachycephalic airway syndrome — the flat 'peke-face' restricts airflow, causing noisy breathing, exercise and heat intolerance, and in severe cases surgical correction; markedly worse in extreme show-type faces than in doll-face Persians.
• Excessive tearing and entropion / blocked nasolacrimal ducts — the shortened muzzle distorts tear drainage, causing chronic eye discharge, staining, and skin-fold infection; some Persians also have inward-rolling eyelids requiring surgery.
• Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-pd, the Persian/early-onset form) — an inherited retinal degeneration leading to blindness, with a DNA test available for responsible breeders.
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — thickening of the heart muscle that can cause sudden decline; warrants periodic cardiac screening in adults.
• Dental malocclusion and crowding — the compressed jaw misaligns teeth, accelerating periodontal disease and making routine dental care a recurring cost.
• Coat matting and skin-fold dermatitis — not a genetic disease but a near-certain welfare problem without daily grooming, leading to painful pelting, sedated shave-downs, and infected facial folds.
